Month-by-Month Breakdown
January & February – Winter Quiet
The quietest, most affordable time to visit Cape San Blas. The beach is practically empty, prices for vacation rentals are at their lowest, and the weather is mild by most standards — though too cool for swimming. Air temperatures in the 60s°F make for pleasant walks on the beach, and the winter light on the Gulf is genuinely beautiful. This is snowbird season, and the area attracts folks from the north who appreciate mild temperatures and solitude.
Best for: Budget travelers, nature lovers, people seeking solitude
Not ideal for: Swimming, water sports
March – Early Spring
Spring begins to arrive in March, with temperatures climbing and the first hints of warmth returning. Spring break brings a moderate uptick in visitors, but Cape San Blas remains far less crowded than more popular destinations. Water is still too cool for most swimmers (65°F), but fishing picks up significantly in March.
April & May – The Sweet Spot
Many experienced Cape San Blas visitors consider April and May the single best time to visit. Temperatures are warm and comfortable (70s–80s°F), the water is warming up nicely (70–76°F), crowds are manageable, prices are below peak, and the natural environment is at its most vibrant. Wildflowers bloom, birds are migrating through, and the fishing is excellent. May can be warm and somewhat humid, but afternoon thunderstorms are less frequent than in summer.
June – Early Summer
June marks the official start of summer season at Cape San Blas. Visitors pour in, particularly on weekends, as school lets out across the region. The water reaches the low 80s°F and is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and water sports. Afternoon thunderstorms are common — typically developing in the heat of the day and passing quickly. Vacation rental prices jump significantly in June.
July & August – Peak Season
The busiest and hottest months. Temperatures regularly hit the low 90s°F, the water is at its warmest (85°F), and vacation rentals are booked solid. The July 4th week is typically the single busiest week of the year. Expect significant afternoon thunderstorm activity daily — this is just part of the Florida summer experience. Despite the heat and crowds, the warm water and long summer days make this an excellent time for families.
September – The Transition Month
September is a mixed bag. The water is still very warm from summer, but crowds begin to thin as school starts back up. Prices often drop significantly after Labor Day. The downside: September is the most active month for hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. Weather can be unsettled, and visitors should keep an eye on tropical weather systems. When September is calm, it's one of the best months to visit.
October – Best Fall Month
October is excellent. Temperatures settle into the comfortable upper 70s°F, the water is still warm enough for swimming (around 77°F), crowds are minimal, prices are much lower than summer, and the weather is often spectacular — clear skies, low humidity, and those gorgeous fall light conditions that photographers love. Fishing is at its best in October. Bird migration is in full swing for wildlife enthusiasts.
November & December – Late Fall Into Winter
November brings steadily cooling temperatures and a return to off-season quiet. The water cools below comfortable swimming temperatures for most visitors, but the beach is extraordinarily peaceful. December is mild and quiet, with Christmas and New Year's being the only busy periods during the winter months.
Hurricane Season Considerations
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the peak of activity from mid-August through mid-October. Cape San Blas and the broader Forgotten Coast are in the hurricane danger zone and have been affected by major storms in recent years. If you're planning a trip during hurricane season, consider purchasing travel insurance that covers weather cancellations, and monitor tropical weather forecasts as your trip approaches.
📋 Our Recommendation
If you want the best combination of great weather, swimmable water, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices — visit in late April/early May or in October. Both periods offer excellent conditions without the peak-season cost and crowds.
