General Questions About Cape San Blas

Cape San Blas is a narrow barrier peninsula in Gulf County, Florida, located on the Panhandle. It's about 15–20 minutes south of Port St. Joe via County Road 30-E (Cape San Blas Road), which turns off from US Highway 98. The nearest airports are in Panama City Beach (ECP, about 55 miles west) and Tallahassee (TLH, about 90 miles northeast). The cape is roughly 90 miles southwest of Tallahassee and 50 miles east of Panama City.

Cape San Blas is known for its pristine, uncrowded Gulf beaches with brilliant white sand and clear water, dog-friendly beaches where dogs are allowed year-round, exceptional shelling, world-class fishing in both the Gulf and St. Joseph Bay, outstanding wildlife including sea turtles, dolphins, and bald eagles, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, and its unspoiled Old Florida charm free from large-scale commercial development.

Cape San Blas is approximately 45–55 miles east of Panama City Beach, typically about a 50–65 minute drive depending on traffic. The drive takes you along the Gulf Coast through Mexico Beach and Port St. Joe, passing through some very scenic and largely undeveloped coastal landscape.

No, Cape San Blas is not part of the 30A area. Scenic Highway 30A is located east of Destin and Fort Walton Beach, in Walton and Okaloosa counties, and features communities like Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Watercolor. Cape San Blas is a separate destination about 75 miles east of the 30A area, in Gulf County, on what's known as the Forgotten Coast. The two areas are quite different in character.

Beaches & Activities

Yes! Gulf County beaches at Cape San Blas allow dogs year-round with no specific leash requirement on the county beaches, though owners are responsible for maintaining control of their pets. Dogs are NOT allowed in St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. The combination of dog-friendly beaches and many pet-friendly vacation rentals makes Cape San Blas one of Florida's top destinations for visitors with dogs.

No. There are no lifeguards on duty at the public beach accesses along Cape San Blas Road or at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Swim at your own risk and be mindful of rip currents. Young children should be closely supervised. The Gulf waters at Cape San Blas are generally calmer than many Atlantic Coast beaches, but conditions can change.

Bay scalloping season in St. Joseph Bay typically runs from July 1 through September 10, though dates can change year to year based on Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulations. Scalloping is a snorkel-based activity in the seagrass beds of the bay and is one of the most unique recreational experiences available in this area. Check current FWC regulations before your trip.

Cape San Blas has limited traditional snorkeling compared to more reef-rich tropical destinations, but there are opportunities. The bay side offers some snorkeling in the seagrass beds, where you can see sea turtles, crabs, and a variety of fish. The Gulf side can have good water clarity on calm days. The area is better known for kayaking, scalloping, and fishing than snorkeling, but it's not without its underwater highlights.

Vacation Rentals

There are no large hotels or resort chains on Cape San Blas itself. Accommodations are almost exclusively vacation rental homes and cottages. Port St. Joe (15–20 minutes away) has some hotel and motel options, but for the true Cape San Blas experience, a vacation rental on the cape is strongly recommended.

For peak summer weeks (June–August, especially the 4th of July week), booking 6–12 months in advance is common and sometimes necessary for the best properties. Spring break weeks also book quickly. For fall, winter, or early spring, 2–4 months in advance is usually sufficient, and last-minute availability can sometimes be found.

Planning & Weather

Late spring (April–May) and early fall (September–October) offer the best combination of warm weather, lighter crowds, and better prices. Summer is the most popular season, with the warmest water and long days, but also the highest prices and most visitors. Winter is mild and very quiet — great for those seeking solitude and the lowest prices. See our Best Time to Visit guide for complete detail.

Cape San Blas has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer (June–August) averages in the low-to-mid 90s°F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Winter (December–February) is mild, with highs typically in the low-to-mid 60s°F. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities. Hurricane season runs June through November, with September being the peak risk month. See our Weather by Month guide for full details.

Yes, a car is essential. There is no public transportation to or at Cape San Blas, and rideshare services are very limited in this rural area. You'll need a car to get from the airport, to navigate the cape, and to make trips to Port St. Joe and other nearby destinations. Rent a car at the airport before driving out to the cape.
